So tonight we travel back East (depending on how you would arrive there) to Papua New Guinea (PNG), The independent state of PNG is in the Pacific where Australia is to the South and The Salomon Islands are to the East, where snake is quite common to eat…..Not our bag really, also I think it may be a tad difficult to purchase form our local butcher…
PNG is a mountainous country with valleys, rivers, tropical forests, mangrove swamps, coastal plains and coral islands.
In PNG the traditional diet is largely vegetarian with the population relying heavily on sago (a starchy substance taken from sago palms) taro roots and sweet potatoes, which are called a “Kaukau”.
Fruits are also the staple foods which can be a wide variety that include bananas, coconuts, guavas, pineapples, watermelons, papayas and mangoes and often accompany meals.
Pigs and chickens are normally only cooked on special occasions, often cooked in a traditional firepit which is called a “Mumu”.
Those who live on the coasts enjoy fish, crab and crayfish and the cuisine of PNG is based on native ingredients which are easily gathered from the jungle or grown in home gardens..
Tonight we opted for a traditional fish dish – Curried Fish. Fish is an important and a staple food throughout the coastal regions. The river systems as well as the sea are full of delicious fish to eat. Fish dishes are easy to prepare and cook, are low in fat and have a large amounts. An easy and tasty dish to prepare is a fish curry. The recipe we used can be found on the website listed in the web links.
I love food and I love everything involved with food. I love the fun of it. I love restaurants. I love cooking, although I don’t cook very much. I love kitchens.

Again I don’t believe my pictures give the curry justice, cooked in coconut milk and it was certainly, in my opinion, tasty. We opted to serve this with traditional sweet potato bake – Kau Kau, again the recipe can be sourced in the links. It was again easy to prepare and delicious to eat….
Family Verdict: Although we all found it very tasty, it wasn’t one of the better meals according to the others, but myself. being a lover of fish am happy to try it anyway it can come. I really enjoyed the baked sweet potato and feel that could be a simple accompaniment to any meal.
Next time on our journey we head off to Iran, the finger landed on a place called Kashmar…I look forward to my research and the delights we cook up from this country formally known as Persia.
